Bosu Digg

Probably one of my all time favorite exercises with the BOSU Ball!  Such a challenge to stay balanced on one foot with eyes closed.  I used to travel all over the country bringing the BOSU Ball to fitness conventions.  I would offer anyone and everyone $100 if they could stand on the BOSU Ball with one foot - eyes closed for only 10 seconds.  I gave people three attempts.  I never had to pay anyone.  There were some close ones - like 9 seconds.  And I can remember only two people who performed the feat for more than 10 seconds during the several years and thousands of people who tried, (fortunately I hadn't offered the bet to these two individuals!).

I believe I learned more about my body awareness and ankle stability from this exercise than perhaps any other.  Eyes closed with two feet is also very useful because you can learn to really relax despite the balance challenge.  But one foot eyes closed will keep you busy for some time as your body tries to figure it out.

I used to put on some Miles Davis, open a bottle of red wine, and practice this exercise.  I can remember the milestones - first 10 seconds, then 30, then a full minute - then learning to do it with either leg.

My longest ever balancing on one foot with my eyes closed on the BOSU Ball was a little better than 10 minutes.  The shear pain and exhaustion in my foot and my glute after 10 minutes was perhaps the biggest challenge at that point.

If you ever get to a minute, please let me know!  You will be among a very rare breed when you can do this.
