Finding My Balance

The first time I met David was in the Spring of 2000 while completing a Personal Training internship at a facility in La Jolla, CA. He came out from the East Coast to give our staff a demonstration of his brand new invention, the BOSU Balance Trainer.

At the time, it was still in its prototype phase - a wooden platform with half of a stability ball glued, stapled and duct taped to it. I remember standing on the BOSU Ball for the very first time. I was blown away! I couldn't believe how much work was happening in my body from just standing on my own two feet. I loved the sensation and the new challenge was exciting. At that moment, I was introduced to a new way of exercising that would change many aspects of my life forever.

To me, BOSU represents change. Nothing about training with the BOSU Balance Trainer is static. It is dynamic and ever-changing by nature, much akin to life itself. Therefore, in order to ride the waves of life successfully, I need to be able to find my balance.

I'm finding that the older I get, the greater life's challenges become. In order to feel my best, I need to be in great shape - both inside and out! Exercise now means more to me than simply having the body that I want. Now that I am a Mom, I don't have as much time to devote to exercise each day as I once did so my workouts need to be much more EFFICIENT.

After being physically active for over a decade, my body also needs CHANGE and I find that I am craving more VARIETY and STIMULATION from my workouts than ever before - both physically and mentally!

Training with the BOSU Ball gives me all of that - efficiency, variety and stimulation - for the body and the mind. It also brings back the element of "play" into my exercise... the natural way that kids (who aren't stuck in front of a television or computer screen!) stay fit!

My goal as I continue on my journey to stay fit is to share what I am learning and discovering with you. I will be exploring David's brand of BOSU "Both Sides Utilized" Training and many of his exercises and techniques are very unique. Through my BLOG, I hope that offering my perspective will encourage and inspire you to explore them too! I also look forward to sharing the BOSU exercises that I have used (and love) in Group Exercise formats and in Personal Training to help you expand your repertoire and add some more tools to your toolbox! You can also get tips as to how you can fine-tune your diet by checking out the recipes I post. Most importantly, I hope that honestly sharing my experiences on the path toward living a balanced lifestyle will motivate you to embark on a similar journey yourself.

Physical activity in life is crucial and we need more balance in our lives than ever before. I can't think of a better way to exercise mind/body balance in an interesting, challenging and stimulating way than with BOSU!
